Writing tips

How to Write I Love You in Cursive

I love you is three short words with a lot of space between them. Write each word on its own a few times, then the whole line.

  1. Make the capital I stand alone. The cursive capital I starts low, swings up into a loop, and comes back down; it does not join the next word, so leave a clear space after it.
  2. Join l-o-v-e without lifting. Keep the l loop tall, let o and v leave from the top with a short bridge, and finish e with a light tail.
  3. Drop the y below the line. The y loop in you hangs under the baseline; finish ou at the same height as love so the line looks even.
  4. One line or two? On a wide card, keep it to one line. On a small or square card, put I love on the first line and you below it, centred.

For focused letter practice, see capital I, capital L and lowercase y. Writing love you or forever and always instead? Type it in the box above; the same tips apply.

Love letter guide

How to Write a Love Letter

A love letter does not need to be long or poetic. It needs to sound like you and say something only you could say. Handwriting it in cursive makes it a keepsake.

  1. Start with their name. “Dear Sam,” “My love,” or the nickname only you use. Letter this part in your largest cursive.
  2. Name one real moment. The night you met, a trip, a hard week they helped you through. A specific memory says more than any big word.
  3. Say what you love about them. Pick two or three small things: the way they laugh, the coffee they bring you, how they calm you down.
  4. Look ahead. One line about what you are looking forward to together: the next trip, the next home, the next ordinary Sunday together.
  5. Sign off warmly. “All my love,” “Yours, always,” or “Forever and always,” then your name.

Write a rough draft first, then copy it slowly onto good paper. If your hand gets tired, print a practice sheet of the opening line and trace it until it flows. The love letters for him and for her above follow these same five steps.

FAQ

Questions about the I love you cards

Can I save these love notes as images?

Yes. Every card above downloads as a PNG image, with its coloured background or transparent. Text it, set it as a lock screen, or drop it into Canva, Google Docs, or Word to make your own card. Each card is 2,400 pixels wide, which prints sharply up to about 8 inches across.

How long should a love letter be?

Long enough to say one true thing well. A love note can be a single line; a love letter usually fits on one side of a card or a sheet of notepaper, about 100 to 250 words. Handwritten in cursive, that is roughly fifteen to twenty minutes of writing.

What pen is best for writing a love letter?

A fine felt-tip or gel pen around 0.5 mm in black, dark blue, or deep red writes smoothly in cursive and does not bleed through notepaper. For a large I love you on a card front, a brush pen gives the thick and thin strokes cursive is known for. Let the ink dry for a minute before you fold the letter.

When should I choose the transparent PNG?

Choose the transparent PNG when the lettering goes on top of something else: a photo, a mug, kraft paper, or your own card design. Choose the PNG with background when you want the finished card exactly as shown.

How do I use the printable practice sheet?

Choose Printable practice in the preview above, pick portrait or landscape, then print or save the sheet as a PDF from the print dialog. Each line of your message prints first as a grey row to trace, then as blank rows to write on your own. Trace your note two or three times, write it on the blank rows, and only then copy it onto the card.

Can I use the I love you cards on things I sell?

Yes. The downloads are free for personal and commercial use. They are made from fonts released under the SIL Open Font License.
