How to write capital L in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start near the middle and swing up and to the right to the top line.
- Loop back to the left and pull a slanted stroke down toward the baseline.
- Curve left at the bottom and make a small loop lying flat on the baseline.
- Come out of the loop to the right along the baseline and rise into the exit.
Common mistakes
- Upright base loop. A base loop that stands up turns L into a capital S or a 2. Let it lie flat on the baseline.
- No base loop. Without the bottom loop, L looks like a capital I or a lowercase l. Add the flat loop before the exit.
- Top loop too wide. A wide top loop makes L look like a capital G or Q. Keep it narrow.
Easy to confuse with
Capital L is close to capital I, S and the number 2. I has no base loop, S curves back to the right, and a 2 has a flat base without a loop.
Joining to the next letter
Capital L ends on the baseline after its flat loop, so it joins easily. In Le, the exit flows into the loop of e. Li rises to the short stroke of i. La travels right before turning into the oval, and in Lo the exit needs a bridge into the top of the o.

Questions about capital L
Does cursive capital L connect to the next letter?
Yes. It ends on the baseline after the small flat loop, so you can keep writing.
