How to write lowercase y in cursive

Lowercase y in cursive, written in Parisienne script

Stroke by stroke

  1. Start with a small overcurve hump that reaches the midline.
  2. Pull down into a cup on the baseline and swing up to the midline.
  3. Pull a straight stroke down through the baseline to the descender line.
  4. Loop to the left and swing back up to cross at the baseline, then continue into the exit.

Common mistakes

  • Closed top. If the second stroke closes over the first, y becomes g. Leave the top open.
  • Loop crossing too high. A loop that crosses above the baseline squeezes the cup. Cross on the baseline.
  • No hump. Starting with a straight upstroke makes y look like the second half of u followed by j. Start with a small hump.

Easy to confuse with

Lowercase y is most often confused with g, j and the pair uj. The open top separates y from g, the hump and cup separate it from j, and the hump keeps it from splitting into two letters.

Joining to the next letter

Lowercase y exits from the baseline after its lower loop. Yo needs a bridge into the top of the o. Ys climbs to a point for the s. Ye flows into the loop of e, and ya travels right before turning into the oval.
