How to write lowercase b in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start at the baseline and swing an upstroke to the right, rising all the way to the top line.
- Loop to the left at the top and pull a straight, slanted line back down to the baseline.
- Without lifting the pen, curve up and to the right into a small rounded bowl that reaches the midline.
- Finish with a tiny check and a short bridge to the right along the midline. Do not drop back to the baseline.
Common mistakes
- Dropping the exit. If the last stroke falls back to the baseline, b looks like l followed by an extra stroke, and the next letter joins too low. Keep the bridge at the midline.
- Short loop. A loop that stops below the top line makes b look like an e. The loop should be as tall as the loops of l, h and k.
- Curved downstroke. A downstroke that bows outward turns the loop into a wide oval that can fill with ink. Keep it straight and parallel to your slant.
Easy to confuse with
Lowercase b is easy to confuse with l and f. All three start with the same tall loop. Lowercase l ends at the baseline with a plain exit, f drops below the baseline into a second loop, and only b closes with a small bowl and a bridge at the midline. In quick handwriting, a b with a weak bridge can also pass for le.
Joining to the next letter
Lowercase b is one of the four bridge letters in cursive, together with o, v and w. Because its exit stays at the midline, the next letter starts from the top of its own body instead of from the baseline. In be, add a small dip so the loop of e still forms. In bo and ba, the bridge runs straight into the top of the oval, so slow down there and let the oval close. In bl, the bridge turns into a tall upstroke for the loop of l.

Questions about lowercase b
Why does cursive lowercase b end at the middle line?
The bridge at the midline is what tells a reader the letter is b and not l. Ending high also sets up the next letter, which starts from the midline instead of from the baseline.
Which letters should I practice before lowercase b?
Practice l and h first. They use the same tall loop, so once the loop is even and the downstroke stays straight, b only adds the bowl and the bridge. Then practice o, v and w, the other bridge letters, so the high exit becomes a habit.
