How to write lowercase m in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Swing up and over from the baseline in an overcurve that forms the first hump at the midline.
- Pull down to the baseline, retrace up the same line and arch over into the second hump.
- Repeat once more for the third hump, keeping all three the same height and width.
- Bring the last downstroke to the baseline and rise into the exit.
Common mistakes
- Two humps. With only two humps, m turns into n. Count three.
- Pointed humps. Sharp tops make m look like a w or a row of i’s. Round the tops.
- Humps of different widths. Uneven spacing makes m read as ni or rn. Keep the humps the same width.
Easy to confuse with
Lowercase m is confused with n, rn and w. Count the humps to tell m from n, keep the humps rounded to keep it from becoming w, and keep the spacing even so it does not split into rn.
Joining to the next letter
Lowercase m exits low after its last hump. In me, the exit flows into the loop of e. Ma swings right before the oval. Mo needs a bridge into the top of the o, and mi rises to the short stroke of i.
