How to write lowercase h in cursive

Lowercase h in cursive, written in Parisienne script

Stroke by stroke

  1. Swing up from the baseline to the top line and loop to the left.
  2. Pull a straight, slanted line down to the baseline.
  3. Retrace up the stem a little and arch over into a hump that reaches the midline.
  4. Come down to the baseline and finish with an upward exit.

Common mistakes

  • Hump with a loop. Adding a small loop in the hump turns h into k. Keep the hump smooth.
  • Short loop. A loop that stops at the midline makes h look like an n. Take it up to the top line.
  • Hump too wide. A wide, flat hump stretches the letter so it reads as lu. Keep the hump about as wide as the n hump.

Easy to confuse with

Lowercase h is confused with k, n and the pair ln. The loop separates h from n, the smooth hump separates it from k, and the retrace up the stem keeps it from splitting into two letters.

Joining to the next letter

Lowercase h exits low, from the end of its hump. In he, the exit flows straight into the loop of e. Ha travels right before turning back into the oval. Hi rises to the short stroke of i, and ho needs a bridge into the top of the o.
