How to write lowercase w in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Swing up from the baseline to the midline.
- Pull down, round the bottom and swing up to the midline.
- Pull down again, round the bottom and swing up to the midline a second time.
- Finish with a short bridge to the right along the midline.
Common mistakes
- Dropping the exit. If w exits from the baseline, it reads as u followed by i. Keep the bridge at the midline.
- Pointed bottoms. Sharp points at the bottom make w look like a printed w. Round the cups.
- Extra cup. A third cup reads as uu or ui. Make two.
Easy to confuse with
Lowercase w is confused with u, m and the pair ui. The bridge at the midline separates w from u, its cups separate it from the humps of m, and the bridge keeps it from splitting into two letters.
Joining to the next letter
Lowercase w exits at the midline. Wi drops into a point for i. In we, add a small dip so the loop of e forms. Wa runs the bridge into the top of the oval, and wh climbs to the top line for the loop of h.
