How to write lowercase p in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Swing up from the baseline to the midline.
- Pull a straight stem down through the baseline to the descender line.
- Retrace up the stem and curve over to the right into a bowl that comes back to the baseline.
- Close the bowl on the stem and rise into the exit.
Common mistakes
- Loop at the bottom. A loop at the end of the stem turns p into a cursive f or j. Retrace the stem.
- Bowl too high. A bowl that floats above the baseline leaves a gap at the bottom. Close it on the baseline.
- Short stem. A stem that barely drops below the baseline makes p look like n. Take it to the descender line.
Easy to confuse with
Lowercase p is confused with n, j and the printed b written upside down. The descending stem separates p from n, and the bowl separates it from j.
Joining to the next letter
Lowercase p exits low, from where the bowl meets the baseline. In pr, the exit turns into the shoulder of r. Pe flows into the loop of e. Pa and po need the exit to travel right before turning into the next oval.
