How to write lowercase i in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Swing up from the baseline to the midline.
- Stop with a sharp point at the top, then pull straight down to the baseline.
- Round off at the bottom and rise into the exit stroke.
- Finish the whole word, then come back and add the dot above the letter.
Common mistakes
- Loop at the top. A loop turns i into e. Retrace the top into a sharp point.
- Dot too far away. A dot placed far to the side lands over the wrong letter. Put it directly above the i.
- Dotting mid-word. Stopping to dot each i breaks the flow and the rhythm of the word. Write the word first and dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s at the end.
Easy to confuse with
Lowercase i is confused with e, the start of u and an undotted t. The sharp point keeps i from becoming e, and the dot is what separates it from the first half of u.
Joining to the next letter
Lowercase i exits low. In in, the exit climbs into the first hump of n. It needs a taller exit for the stem of t. Is rises to a point for the top of s, and in io the exit needs a bridge into the top of the o.
