How to write lowercase d in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Arrive at the midline and pull back into a counterclockwise oval, the same as for a.
- Close the oval, then keep going straight up past the midline to the top line.
- Retrace down the stem to the baseline without making a loop.
- Finish with a short upward exit toward the next letter.
Common mistakes
- Looped stem. A loop in the stem turns d into a cursive l joined to an a, so the word reads with an extra letter. Retrace the stem tightly.
- Short stem. A stem that stops at the midline makes d look like a. Take it all the way to the top line.
- Stem away from the oval. If the stem rises from a gap beside the oval, d splits into cl. Start the stem from the right side of the closed oval.
Easy to confuse with
Lowercase d is confused with a, cl and the cursive b written backwards. The quickest checks are the closed oval and the retraced stem that reaches the top line without a loop.
Joining to the next letter
Lowercase d ends low on the baseline. In de, the exit runs straight into the loop of e. In di, it rises to the midline for the short stroke of i. Da and do need a longer exit that swings right before turning back into the next oval.

Questions about lowercase d
Does cursive lowercase d have a loop?
In most school cursive, no. The stem is retraced so the letter stays narrow and cannot be mistaken for cl. Some decorative styles add a loop on purpose.
How tall should cursive d be?
The oval sits between the baseline and the midline, and the stem reaches the top line, the same height as b, h, k and l.
