How to write lowercase s in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Swing up from the baseline to a sharp point just above the midline.
- Drop down and to the right in a small curve.
- Bring the curve back to the left on the baseline and close it against the upstroke.
- Leave from the closed base with an upward exit.
Common mistakes
- Rounded top. A rounded top turns s into a small o or e. Make the top a sharp point.
- Open base. If the curve does not close at the bottom, s looks like r or i. Close it against the upstroke.
- Too short. A point that stops below the midline makes s hard to read. Let it rise just above the midline.
Easy to confuse with
Lowercase s is often confused with r, e and o. The sharp point and closed base are what separate s from all of them.
Joining to the next letter
Lowercase s exits low from its closed base. St needs a taller exit for the stem of t. Se flows into the loop of e. Si rises to the short stroke of i, and so needs a bridge into the top of the o.

Why does cursive s look so different from print?
The cursive shape is built to start with an upstroke and end on the baseline, so it can join on both sides.
Is there more than one cursive s?
Some styles use a rounded s at the end of a word or after certain letters. The pointed s shown here is the most common.
