How to write lowercase v in cursive

Lowercase v in cursive, written in Parisienne script

Stroke by stroke

  1. Start with a small overcurve that rises to the midline.
  2. Pull down to a point on the baseline.
  3. Swing straight up to the midline on the right.
  4. Finish with a short bridge to the right along the midline.

Common mistakes

  • Round bottom. A round bottom turns v into u. Keep a clean point.
  • Dropping the exit. Leaving from the baseline makes v look like a u or an n. Keep the bridge at the midline.
  • Sharp start. Starting with a point instead of a hump can make v look like a small w. Round the start.

Easy to confuse with

Lowercase v is often confused with u, n and r. The point at the bottom separates v from u, and the bridge at the midline separates it from n and r.

Joining to the next letter

Lowercase v exits at the midline, so the next letter starts from the top of its body. In ve, add a small dip so the loop of e still forms. Vi drops into a point for i. Va and vo run the bridge straight into the top of the next oval.

Questions about lowercase v

Why does cursive v end at the middle line?

Lowercase v is a bridge letter, like b, o and w. The high exit keeps it from looking like u.

Does cursive v have a round top?

Yes. It starts with a small overcurve hump, which sets it apart from the printed v.
