How to write lowercase c in cursive

Lowercase c in cursive, written in Parisienne script

Stroke by stroke

  1. Arrive on an upstroke to the midline, then add a tiny hook back to the right at the top.
  2. Pull down and to the left in a counterclockwise curve.
  3. Round the bottom on the baseline, leaving the right side open.
  4. Rise into the exit stroke that leads to the next letter.

Common mistakes

  • No hook. Without the little hook at the top, c can look like the start of an e or a plain slanted line. Add a small hook before the curve.
  • Hook turned into a loop. If the hook grows into a full loop, c becomes an e. Keep it as a short touch, not a circle.
  • Curve too open. A very shallow curve reads as an i without a dot. Let the curve wrap around before it rises again.

Easy to confuse with

Lowercase c is easily confused with e, i and the start of a. Lowercase e has a loop instead of a hook, i is a straight stroke with a dot, and an a that has not closed its oval often passes for a c followed by an i.

Joining to the next letter

Lowercase c exits low, like a. In co, the exit rises to the midline and needs a short bridge into the top of the o. Ce goes straight into the loop of e. In ca, the exit has to travel to the right before it turns back into the oval, and in ch it climbs to the top line for the loop of h.

Questions about lowercase c

Why does cursive c start with a hook?

The hook shows where the letter begins and makes c easy to tell apart from e and i. It also sets the angle for the curve that follows.

Which letters use the same start as cursive c?

Lowercase a, d, g, o and q all begin with the same counterclockwise curve. Practicing c first makes those letters more even.
