How to write lowercase k in cursive

Lowercase k in cursive, written in Parisienne script

Stroke by stroke

  1. Swing up from the baseline to the top line and loop to the left.
  2. Pull a straight line down to the baseline.
  3. Retrace up a little and curve over into a small bump that reaches the midline, closing it with a tiny loop at the stem.
  4. Kick the leg out and down to the baseline, then rise into the exit.

Common mistakes

  • No inner loop. Without the small loop, k becomes h. Pinch the bump into a loop before kicking out.
  • Bump too tall. A bump that rises above the midline makes k look like an R or a lowercase b. Keep it below the midline.
  • Kick too wide. A very wide kick pushes the next letter away. Keep the leg close and let the exit do the traveling.

Easy to confuse with

Lowercase k is confused with h, b and lr. The inner loop separates k from h, the kick separates it from b, and the tall loop keeps the letter in one piece.

Joining to the next letter

Lowercase k exits from the baseline after its kick. In ke, the exit flows into the loop of e. Ki rises to the short stroke of i. Ks climbs to a point, and ka travels right before the oval.
