How to write lowercase q in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Arrive at the midline and pull back into a counterclockwise oval.
- Close the oval and pull a straight stem down through the baseline to the descender line.
- Loop to the right at the bottom and swing back up to meet the stem at the baseline.
- Add a small check and rise into the exit for u.
Common mistakes
- Loop turning left. A lower loop to the left turns q into g. Turn right.
- Open oval. An oval that does not close makes q look like a y with a different tail. Close it before the stem.
- Loop crossing above the baseline. If the loop meets the stem too high, the u starts too high. Meet the stem on the baseline.
Easy to confuse with
Lowercase q is most often confused with g. Both have a closed oval and a stem below the line, but g loops to the left and q loops to the right.
Joining to the next letter
Lowercase q is almost always followed by u in English. The check at the baseline flows straight into the first cup of u. Practice qu as a single unit, in words such as quick, queen and square.

Questions about lowercase q
What is the difference between cursive g and q?
The lower loop. Cursive g loops to the left, and q loops to the right and ends with a small check.
Should I practice q on its own?
Practice qu instead. Almost every English word with q has a u after it, so the join is what you will write most.
