How to write lowercase x in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Swing up and over from the baseline in a small hump that reaches the midline.
- Pull down to the baseline.
- Round off and rise into the exit for the next letter.
- After the word is finished, cross the downstroke with a short line from upper right to lower left.
Common mistakes
- Missing cross. Without the cross, x looks like n or the start of m. Cross it after the word.
- Cross too long. A long cross runs into nearby letters. Keep it within the x-height.
- Crossing mid-word. Stopping to cross x in the middle of a word breaks the flow. Cross it at the end, with the t’s.
Easy to confuse with
Lowercase x is confused with n, the printed x and a crossed t. The hump shape separates it from a t, and the cross separates it from n.
Joining to the next letter
Lowercase x exits low, so the next letter rises from the baseline. Xt needs a taller exit for the stem of t. Xp rises to the midline before the stem of p drops. Xi goes up to the short stroke of i, and xa swings right before turning into the oval.
