How to write lowercase l in cursive

Lowercase l in cursive, written in Parisienne script

Stroke by stroke

  1. Swing up from the baseline to the top line, leaning to the right.
  2. Loop to the left at the top.
  3. Pull a straight, slanted line down to the baseline.
  4. Round off at the bottom and rise into the exit stroke.

Common mistakes

  • Loop too short. A loop that stops below the top line turns l into e. Take it all the way up.
  • Fat loop. A wide loop slows you down and fills with ink. Keep the loop narrow.
  • Wobbly downstroke. A curved downstroke makes l lean differently from the rest of the word. Keep it straight and on your slant.

Easy to confuse with

Lowercase l is most often confused with e, b and the upper part of f. Height separates l from e, the bowl separates b from l, and f continues below the baseline.

Joining to the next letter

Lowercase l exits low. In le, the exit flows into the loop of e. Li rises to the short stroke of i. La swings right before the oval, and double l in words such as ball needs two loops of the same height.
