How to write lowercase z in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Swing up and over from the baseline in a small hump that reaches the midline.
- Come down to a small dip on the baseline.
- Curve over once more and drop below the baseline into a loop to the left.
- Swing back up to cross at the baseline and continue into the exit.
Common mistakes
- Writing a printed z. A zigzag cannot join on either side. Use the hump, dip and loop.
- Loop too short. A loop that barely drops below the line makes z look like an n or a 3. Take it down to the descender line.
- Missing dip. Without the dip, z looks like a small y or g. Touch the baseline before the loop.
Easy to confuse with
Lowercase z is often confused with y, g and the number 3. The hump and dip separate z from y and g, and the loop below the line separates it from a 3.
Joining to the next letter
Lowercase z exits from the baseline after its lower loop. Ze flows into the loop of e. Za travels right before turning into the oval. Zi rises to the short stroke of i, and zo needs a bridge into the top of the o.

Questions about lowercase z
Why does cursive z go below the line?
The lower loop brings the stroke back to the baseline so z can join the next letter, much like g, j and y.
Is cursive z hard to read?
It is less familiar than other letters. Keeping the hump small and the loop clear makes it easy to recognize in words like pizza and zoo.
