How to write lowercase e in cursive

Lowercase e in cursive, written in Parisienne script

Stroke by stroke

  1. Start on the baseline, or from the previous letter, and swing up and to the right toward the midline.
  2. Curve back to the left at the top to form a small open loop.
  3. Come down on the left side of the loop to the baseline.
  4. Round off on the baseline and rise into the exit stroke.

Common mistakes

  • Closed loop. If the loop fills in, e looks like i or like a blot. Leave a visible eye in the middle.
  • Loop too tall. A loop that reaches above the midline turns e into l. Keep the top of the loop just under the midline.
  • No loop at all. Without the loop, e becomes a c or an i. Make sure the upstroke and the downstroke cross.

Easy to confuse with

Lowercase e is most often confused with l, i and c. The height of the loop tells e from l, the open eye tells it from i, and the crossing stroke tells it from c.

Joining to the next letter

Lowercase e ends low, so the next letter rises from the baseline. In er, the exit becomes the shoulder of r. In es, it climbs to a point for the top of s. En flows into the hump of n, and ed swings right before turning back into the oval of d.

Questions about lowercase e

How big should the loop in cursive e be?

Small. The loop sits below the midline and the eye inside should stay visible. Compare it with l, whose loop reaches the top line.

Why do my cursive e and l look the same?

The loops are the same height. Keep e under the midline and take l all the way to the top line.
