How to write lowercase j in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Swing up from the baseline to the midline.
- Pull a straight stroke down through the baseline to the descender line.
- Loop to the left at the bottom and come back up to cross the stem at the baseline.
- Continue into the exit stroke, and dot the j after the word is finished.
Common mistakes
- Hook instead of loop. A plain hook at the bottom is fine in print, but in cursive it leaves no exit. Loop back up to the baseline.
- Loop crossing too high. If the loop crosses the stem above the baseline, the next letter starts too high. Cross on the baseline.
- Missing dot. Without its dot, j looks like the tail of a g or y. Add the dot after the word.
Easy to confuse with
Lowercase j is confused with g, y and the descender of f. Lowercase g starts with an oval, y starts with a hump, and f has a tall upper loop. The short start and the dot are unique to j.
Joining to the next letter
Lowercase j exits from the baseline after the lower loop. In jo, the exit needs a bridge into the top of the o. Ja swings right before the oval. Ju climbs to the first point of u, and je goes straight into the loop of e.
