How to write lowercase g in cursive

Lowercase g in cursive, written in Parisienne script

Stroke by stroke

  1. Arrive at the midline and pull back into a counterclockwise oval, as for a.
  2. Close the oval and pull a straight stroke down through the baseline to the descender line.
  3. Loop to the left at the bottom and swing back up to cross the stem at the baseline.
  4. Keep rising into the exit stroke for the next letter.

Common mistakes

  • Open oval. If the oval does not close, g becomes a y. Close it before you drop the stem.
  • Loop crossing too high. A lower loop that crosses the stem above the baseline squeezes the oval. Let it cross right on the baseline.
  • Straight tail. A tail with no loop makes g look like a q. Loop to the left and come back up.

Easy to confuse with

Lowercase g is most often confused with q, y and j. Lowercase q has a lower loop that turns the other way and a check at the baseline; y starts with a hump instead of a closed oval; j has no oval at all.

Joining to the next letter

Lowercase g exits from the baseline where the lower loop crosses the stem. In ge, the exit flows into the loop of e. Ga travels right before turning into the oval. Gh climbs to the top line, and gr turns into the shoulder of r.

Questions about lowercase g

What is the difference between cursive g and q?

The lower loop. Cursive g loops to the left and joins from the baseline, while q turns right and ends with a small check.

Where should the loop of cursive g cross the stem?

Right on the baseline. That keeps the oval round and gives the exit a clean start.
