How to write lowercase u in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Swing up from the baseline to the midline.
- Pull down to the baseline, round the bottom and swing up to the midline again.
- Retrace straight down to the baseline.
- Round off and rise into the exit.
Common mistakes
- Round tops. Rounded tops turn u into n. Make the tops sharp.
- Closing the top. If the second stroke curves back over the first cup, u becomes a. Leave the cup open.
- One cup. A single cup reads as i without a dot. Make two.
Easy to confuse with
Lowercase u is confused with n, a and w. Pointed tops separate u from n, the open top separates it from a, and w adds a bridge exit at the midline.
Joining to the next letter
Lowercase u exits low. In ur, the exit turns into the shoulder of r. Us climbs to a point for the s. Un rises into the hump of n, and ut needs a taller exit for the stem of t.
