How to write lowercase f in cursive

Lowercase f in cursive, written in Parisienne script

Stroke by stroke

  1. Swing up from the baseline to the top line and loop to the left, as for l.
  2. Pull a straight stroke down through the baseline to the descender line.
  3. Loop to the right at the bottom and come back up to meet the stem at the baseline.
  4. Tie off with a small check at the baseline and exit to the right.

Common mistakes

  • Lower loop on the wrong side. The upper loop opens to the left and the lower loop to the right. Swapping them makes f look like a j or a mirror image.
  • No tie at the baseline. If the lower loop does not come back to the stem, f looks like a long l. Close it at the baseline.
  • Lower loop too short. A lower loop that barely drops below the baseline turns f into a b. Take it all the way down to the descender line.

Easy to confuse with

Lowercase f is confused with b, l and the long s of old scripts. Lowercase l stops at the baseline, b has a bowl instead of a lower loop, and an f written without its tie can pass for an elongated l.

Joining to the next letter

Lowercase f ties off at the baseline, so the exit is low. In fo, the exit needs a small bridge into the top of the o. Fi rises to the short stroke of i, fr turns into the shoulder of r, and fe goes straight into the loop of e.
