How to write capital B in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start at the top line and pull a straight, slanted stem down to the baseline. Some styles add a small hook at the top first.
- Lift the pen, or retrace up the stem, and return to the top line.
- Draw the upper bowl out to the right and back in to the middle of the stem, finishing with a small loop at the waist.
- Swing out into a larger lower bowl that comes back to the baseline, then end with a short check or a joining stroke.
Common mistakes
- Equal bowls. Two bowls of the same size make B look top-heavy. Keep the upper bowl a little smaller than the lower one.
- Missing waist loop. Without the small loop in the middle, the bowls can drift apart and the letter reads as a capital R or P. Bring the upper bowl back to the stem before starting the lower one.
- Bowls that miss the stem. If the lower bowl closes away from the stem, B turns into a 13. End the lower bowl on or just past the stem.
Easy to confuse with
Capital B can be mistaken for capital R, capital P and the number 13. P has only the upper bowl, R swaps the lower bowl for a leg, and a B whose bowls do not touch the stem looks like a one and a three side by side.
Joining to the next letter
Capital B ends with a small check near the baseline, so in many styles it does not join. You can either lift the pen and start the next letter fresh, or let the check run into it. Be and Ba join easily from that check. Bo needs a clean lift or a short bridge into the top of the oval, and in Bl the exit should climb straight to the top line.

Questions about capital B
Does cursive capital B connect to the next letter?
It depends on the style. Traditional school cursive ends B with a check and lifts the pen, while flowing styles such as Dancing Script carry the stroke into the next letter.
Why does my cursive B look like an R?
Usually the lower bowl is too small or opens away from the stem. Make the lower bowl the larger of the two and close it on the stem.
