How to write capital Z in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start near the middle and swing up and over in a hump that reaches the top line.
- Come down to a small dip near the baseline.
- Curve over again and drop below the baseline into a loop to the left.
- Swing back up to cross at the baseline and continue into the exit.
Common mistakes
- Writing a printed Z. Three straight lines break the cursive flow and cannot join. Use the hump, dip and loop.
- Loop above the line. A loop that stays above the baseline makes Z look like a 3 or an E. Drop it below the line.
- Dip too deep. A deep dip splits Z into two humps that read as a capital M. Keep the dip small.
Easy to confuse with
Cursive capital Z is easy to confuse with the number 3, capital Q and lowercase z. A 3 stays above the line, Q lies flat on the baseline, and lowercase z is half the height.
Joining to the next letter
Capital Z joins from the lower loop where it crosses the baseline. Ze flows into the loop of e. Za travels right before turning into the oval. Zi rises to the short stroke of i, and Zo needs a bridge into the top of the o.

Questions about capital Z
Why doesn’t cursive capital Z look like a printed Z?
The cursive form uses curves and a lower loop so it can be written in one stroke and join the next letter.
Does cursive capital Z go below the line?
