How to write capital P in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start near the top line with a small hook and pull a slanted stem down to the baseline.
- Retrace up the stem to the top line.
- Swing out to the right in a bowl that comes back to the stem around the middle of the letter.
- End just past the stem, then lift the pen.
Common mistakes
- Bowl too low. A bowl that reaches the baseline turns P into a capital D. Close it at the middle.
- Bowl not touching the stem. A bowl that stops short of the stem makes P look like a capital I and a lowercase c. Bring it back to the stem.
- Extra bowl. A second bowl underneath makes P into B. Stop after one.
Easy to confuse with
Capital P is close to capital B, R and D. B has two bowls, R adds a leg, and D has one bowl that fills the full height.
Joining to the next letter
Capital P ends at the middle of the letter, so most styles lift the pen. Start the next letter close to the stem. In Pr and Pe, the new letter begins just after the bowl. Pa and Po follow the same pattern; flowing scripts may carry the bowl down into the next letter.
