How to write capital H in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start with a small hook near the top line and pull the left stem down to the baseline.
- Lift the pen and start the right stem at the top line. Pull it down to the baseline.
- Loop back up and to the left to make a small loop that touches the left stem near the middle.
- Swing out from the loop into the exit stroke.
Common mistakes
- Loop missing the left stem. If the middle loop does not reach the left stem, H falls apart into two letters. Bring the loop across until it touches.
- Stems at different slants. Two stems that lean differently make H look like a capital K. Keep them parallel.
- Loop too low. A loop near the baseline makes the letter read as a capital U. Keep it near the middle.
Easy to confuse with
Capital H can be mistaken for capital K, U and N. K has an arm and a leg instead of a second stem, U has no crossing loop, and an H with stems too close together looks like an N.
Joining to the next letter
Capital H joins from the end of its middle loop. In He, the exit drops toward the baseline and flows into the loop of e. Ha needs a short travel to the right before the oval. Hi rises to the midline, and in Ho the exit runs into the top of the o.

Questions about capital H
Does cursive capital H need two strokes?
Most styles write H in two strokes: the left stem first, then the right stem with the middle loop. Some decorative styles join them into one.
Where does capital H join the next letter?
From the middle loop, which swings out into the exit. That lets names such as Henry and Hannah keep going without another lift.
