How to write capital E in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start just below the top line with a small clockwise hook, then curve left and down to about the middle of the letter.
- Make a small loop pointing to the left where the two curves meet.
- Swing out into a larger counterclockwise curve that comes down to the baseline.
- Rise from the baseline into the exit stroke.
Common mistakes
- Curves the same size. Equal curves make E look like a stacked pair of c’s. Keep the top curve smaller than the bottom.
- Waist loop too big. A large middle loop turns E into a fancy capital G. Keep it small and tucked in.
- Lower curve too closed. If the lower curve wraps back on itself, the letter reads as an O with a cap. Leave the right side open.
Easy to confuse with
Capital E can be mistaken for capital C, the number 3 written backwards and capital G. C has a single curve, a 3 opens to the left, and G drops a loop or stem below the baseline.
Joining to the next letter
Capital E joins from a low exit. In Er, the exit becomes the small shoulder of r. Es needs a sharp point at the top of the s. En climbs into the first hump of n, and in Ed the exit swings right and back into the oval of d.

Questions about capital E
Why does cursive capital E look like a backward 3?
The shape comes from two connected curves, which can be written in one motion. It is quicker than the printed E with its three straight bars.
Does capital E connect in cursive?
Yes. Capital E ends on the baseline with an exit stroke, so it joins straight into names such as Emma or Elena.
