How to write capital W in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start near the top line with a small hook and pull down to a point on the baseline.
- Swing up to the top line, or a little below it.
- Pull down to a second point on the baseline.
- Swing up to the top line and finish with a small curve to the right.
Common mistakes
- Round valleys. Round bottoms turn W into a double U. Keep the points sharp.
- Uneven peaks. A middle peak much taller than the sides makes W look like a capital M upside down. Keep the middle peak at or just below the top line.
- Only one valley. With one point, W is a V. Make two.
Easy to confuse with
Capital W is close to capital V, M and U. V has one point, M opens at the bottom, and U has a round bottom.
Joining to the next letter
Capital W ends at the top line, so most styles lift the pen. Start Wi, We, Wa and Wh close to the W. In flowing styles, the finishing curve can bridge into the next letter, the same way lowercase w does.
