How to write capital Y in cursive

Capital Y in cursive, written in Parisienne script

Stroke by stroke

  1. Start near the top line with a small hook and pull down into a cup.
  2. Swing up to the top line on the right.
  3. Pull a straight stroke down through the baseline to the descender line.
  4. Loop to the left and swing back up to cross at the baseline, then continue into the exit.

Common mistakes

  • Stopping at the baseline. A Y that stops on the baseline is a capital U. Continue to the descender line.
  • Loop turning right. A lower loop to the right makes Y look like a capital Q or a 4. Turn left.
  • Short right side. A right side that starts low makes the letter look like a lowercase y. Take it up to the top line first.

Easy to confuse with

Capital Y is close to capital U, capital J and lowercase y. U stops on the baseline, J has no cup, and lowercase y is half the height above the line.

Joining to the next letter

Capital Y joins from the lower loop where it crosses the baseline. Yo needs a bridge into the top of the o. Ys climbs to a point for the s. Ye flows into the loop of e, and Ya travels right before turning into the oval.
