How to write capital M in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start near the middle with a small loop and pull down to the baseline.
- Retrace up and arch over into the first hump, reaching the top line.
- Come down to the baseline, retrace up and make a second hump.
- Bring the last stroke down to the baseline and rise into the exit.
Common mistakes
- Uneven humps. Humps of different heights make M look unsteady. Keep the tops level, or let the second one sit slightly lower on purpose.
- Gaps between humps. If you do not retrace each upstroke, the humps open into loops and the letter turns into a row of l’s. Retrace up the stem before each hump.
- Too many humps. Adding an extra hump turns capital M into a stretched lowercase m. Count the humps.
Easy to confuse with
Capital M is close to capital N, W and lowercase m. N has one fewer hump, W opens at the top, and lowercase m is half the height.
Joining to the next letter
Capital M ends on the baseline after its last hump, so it joins. In Ma, the exit travels right before turning into the oval. Me flows into the loop of e. Mo needs a bridge into the top of the o, and Mi rises to the short stroke of i.
