How to write capital J in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start just above the baseline and swing up and to the right to the top line.
- Loop back to the left and pull a straight stroke down through the baseline to the descender line.
- Loop to the left at the bottom and swing back up to cross the stem at the baseline.
- Keep rising into the exit for the next letter.
Common mistakes
- Stopping at the baseline. A J that ends on the baseline reads as a capital I. Take the stem down to the descender line.
- Upper loop too small. A tiny upper loop makes J look like a lowercase j. Let the upper loop reach the top line.
- Loops of different slant. Upper and lower loops that lean differently make the letter look broken. Keep both on the same slant.
Easy to confuse with
Capital J is most often confused with capital I and with lowercase j or g. I stops on the baseline, lowercase j has only a lower loop and a dot, and g has a closed oval at the top.
Joining to the next letter
Capital J joins from the lower loop where it crosses the baseline. In Jo, the exit needs a bridge into the top of the o. Ja travels right before turning into the oval. Ju climbs to the first point of u, and Je flows into the loop of e.
