How to write capital Q in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start near the middle and swing up and over to the right in a large curve that reaches the top line.
- Pull the curve down to the baseline on the left.
- Make a small loop on the baseline.
- Finish with a short tail to the right along the baseline.
Common mistakes
- Reads as a 2. Capital Q and the number 2 are close. Make the top curve rounder and taller, and keep the base loop small.
- Reads as a capital L. A narrow top curve turns Q into L. Let the curve open wide.
- No base loop. Without the loop on the baseline, the tail cannot lead into the next letter. Add the loop before the tail.
Easy to confuse with
Capital Q is easy to confuse with the number 2, capital L and capital Z. A 2 has a flat base, L has a narrow top, and Z drops a loop below the baseline.
Joining to the next letter
Capital Q is almost always followed by u. In some styles the tail leads straight into the first cup of u; in others you lift the pen and start the u right next to the tail. Either way, keep the u close so Qu reads as one unit.
