How to write capital C in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start just below the top line and make a small clockwise loop or hook to set the direction.
- Swing up to the top line and over to the left in a wide counterclockwise curve.
- Bring the curve down to the baseline, keeping the opening on the right clearly visible.
- Finish with an upward exit from the baseline that leads into the next letter.
Common mistakes
- Closing the curve. If the end of the curve comes back up too far, C turns into an O. Leave a clear gap on the right side.
- Oversized starting loop. A big starting loop makes C look like a capital E or G. Keep that loop small and near the top.
- Flat bottom. A curve that flattens on the baseline looks stiff. Let the bottom round off and then rise straight into the exit.
Easy to confuse with
Capital C is close to capital E, O and G. E adds a second, smaller curve and a loop in the middle; O closes; G adds a loop or a stem that drops below the baseline. A C written small is also easy to mistake for lowercase c.
Joining to the next letter
Capital C joins the next letter from a low exit. In Co, the exit rises to the midline and then needs a small bridge so the o can start its oval from the top. Ce adds a little loop, Ca curves straight into the top of the a, and in Ch the exit climbs to the top line for the tall loop of h.

Questions about capital C
Is cursive capital C just a large lowercase c?
The shape is similar, but capital C reaches the top line and usually begins with a small loop. Lowercase c starts with a short hook at the midline instead.
Do you lift the pen after capital C?
No. Capital C ends on the baseline with an exit stroke, so it flows straight into names such as Charles or Claire.
