How to write capital D in cursive

Capital D in cursive, written in Parisienne script

Stroke by stroke

  1. Start at the top line and pull a slanted stem down to the baseline.
  2. At the bottom, make a small loop to the left and come back along the baseline to the right.
  3. Swing up and around in a large curve that reaches the top line and comes back over the stem.
  4. Finish with a small inner loop or flourish at the top, then lift the pen.

Common mistakes

  • Missing base loop. Without the little loop on the baseline, D looks like a capital O pressed against a line. Add the loop before you start the bowl.
  • Bowl too narrow. A narrow bowl hugs the stem and the letter reads as a capital I or J. Let the bowl swing well to the right.
  • Open top. If the bowl does not return over the stem, D can look like a capital U or a backwards C. Bring the curve back to the left before you lift.

Easy to confuse with

Capital D is easy to mix up with capital O and with the number 2 written fast. O has no stem and no base loop, and a D whose base loop is too large looks like a 2 with a cap.

Joining to the next letter

Capital D finishes at the top of the bowl, far from the baseline, so most styles lift the pen and start the next letter separately. In De and Da, place the next letter close so the word does not split. Di and Do work the same way; only flowing script styles bring a stroke down from the top of D into the next letter.

Questions about capital D

Does cursive capital D connect to the next letter?

In most school cursive, no. D ends at the top of its bowl, so you lift the pen and start the next letter right next to it.

What is the small loop at the bottom of cursive D?

It is part of the classic shape. The loop turns the stem into the start of the bowl, so the letter can be written in one stroke.
