How to write capital O in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start at the top line, a little right of center.
- Pull a counterclockwise oval down to the baseline and back up.
- Overlap the starting point and make a small loop inside the top of the oval.
- Finish with a short tail to the right, then lift the pen.
Common mistakes
- Open oval. An oval that does not close looks like a capital C or U. Bring it all the way back to the start.
- Loop too big. A large inner loop makes O look like a capital Q or a 6 on its side. Keep the loop small.
- Round instead of oval. A perfect circle breaks the slant of the word. Make the oval narrow and lean it.
Easy to confuse with
Capital O is easy to confuse with capital A, C, D and Q. A adds a downstroke, C is open, D has a stem and a base loop, and Q adds a tail at the bottom.
Joining to the next letter
Capital O ends high, so the usual move is a pen lift. Start n, r, u or f right next to the O. In flowing styles, the tail at the top can bridge into On, Or or Ou, the same way a lowercase o bridges.
