How to write capital G in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start on the baseline and swing up in a tall loop that reaches the top line.
- Come down the left side and curve back up into a small loop near the middle.
- Pull a short stem down to the baseline on the right.
- Finish with an upward exit stroke into the next letter.
Common mistakes
- Middle loop too large. A big middle loop makes G look like a capital S or a fancy L. Keep it small.
- Upper loop too narrow. A thin upper loop reads as a capital L. Let the loop open up.
- Missing stem. Without the short stem, G looks like a capital S. Add the downstroke before the exit.
Easy to confuse with
Capital G is close to capital S, L and some forms of capital Q. S has no stem, L has a flat loop on the baseline, and Q ends with a tail instead of a joining exit.
Joining to the next letter
Capital G ends on the baseline, so it joins. In Ge, the exit runs into the loop of e. Ga swings right and turns back into the oval. Gr needs a short climb for the shoulder of r, and Gh goes up to the top line for the tall loop.

Questions about capital G
Why does cursive capital G look so different from the printed G?
The cursive form grew out of a looped stroke that can be written without lifting the pen. Most styles keep the tall loop and the short stem, and many decorative fonts change the rest.
Does cursive capital G join the next letter?
Yes. It ends on the baseline with an exit stroke, so names such as Grace and George can be written without a pen lift.
