How to write capital V in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start near the top line with a small hook.
- Pull down to a point, or a narrow curve, on the baseline.
- Swing up to the top line on the right.
- Finish with a small curve to the right at the top, then lift the pen.
Common mistakes
- Round bottom. A round bottom turns V into U. Keep a narrow point.
- Short right side. A right side that stops at the midline makes V lopsided. Take it to the top line.
- Finishing curve too big. A large curve at the end can read as a second letter. Keep it small.
Easy to confuse with
Capital V is easy to confuse with capital U and W. U has a round bottom and joins from the baseline, and W adds a second point.
Joining to the next letter
Capital V ends at the top line, so the usual move is a pen lift. In Ve, Vi, Va and Vo, start the next letter close to the V. Flowing styles can carry the end of V down into the next letter like a bridge.
