Letter guide
How to write capital S in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start just above the baseline and swing up and to the right to the top line.
- Loop back to the left at the top and curve down, bulging out to the right.
- Bring the curve back to the left near the baseline and close it against the upstroke.
- Finish with a short stroke to the right, or swing into the next letter.
Common mistakes
- Bottom curve too open. An open bottom makes S look like a capital L or a G. Bring the curve back to the upstroke.
- Reverse bulge. Bulging to the left instead of the right turns S into a mirror image. The belly goes on the right.
- Top loop too wide. A wide top loop makes S look like a capital G or a fancy 8. Keep it narrow.
Easy to confuse with
Capital S is close to capital G, L and the number 8. G adds a stem, L has a flat base loop, and an 8 closes both halves.
Joining to the next letter
Capital S ends near the baseline, so many styles join, while traditional school versions finish with a small curl and lift. St needs a taller exit for the stem of t. Se flows into the loop of e. Si rises to the short stroke of i, and So needs a bridge into the top of the o.
