How to write capital F in cursive

Capital F in cursive, written in Parisienne script

Stroke by stroke

  1. Start at the top line and draw a wavy cap stroke from left to right.
  2. Lift the pen and start the stem just under the middle of the cap. Pull it down to the baseline in a gentle curve.
  3. At the bottom, curve to the left and back up into a short hook.
  4. Add a short crossbar through the middle of the stem. Then lift the pen before the next letter.

Common mistakes

  • Missing crossbar. Without the crossbar, F is a capital T. Always cross the stem in the middle.
  • Cap too short. A short cap makes the stem look like a capital J. Let the cap extend well to the right of the stem.
  • Crossbar too low. A crossbar near the baseline is hard to see. Place it about halfway down the stem.

Easy to confuse with

Capital F is almost the same as capital T in cursive; only the crossbar separates them. A long hook at the bottom can also make it look like a capital J.

Joining to the next letter

Capital F usually ends with a pen lift for the crossbar, so the next letter starts fresh. In Fr and Fo, place r or o close to the stem so the word holds together. Fi and Fe can start right under the end of the crossbar, which gives a natural link in flowing styles.

Questions about capital F

What is the difference between cursive F and T?

The crossbar. Both letters have the same cap and stem, and only F has a short bar through the middle of the stem.

Does cursive capital F connect to the next letter?

Usually not in school cursive, because you lift the pen to add the crossbar. Write the next letter close to F so the word does not break.
