How to write capital X in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start near the middle and swing up and over in a hump that reaches the top line.
- Pull down to the baseline and finish with a small upward curve.
- Lift the pen.
- Cross the first stroke with a slanted line from the top right down to the bottom left.
Common mistakes
- Cross in the wrong place. A cross that misses the middle of the curve looks like a capital K or a lone slash. Cross at the middle.
- Straight first stroke. Two straight lines make a printed X, which breaks the cursive flow. Curve the first stroke.
- Forgetting the cross. Without its cross, X looks like capital N or a lowercase n. Add the cross after the word.
Easy to confuse with
Capital X is close to capital K, N and the printed x. K has an arm and leg from the stem, N has a second downstroke, and a printed X uses two straight lines.
Joining to the next letter
The first stroke of capital X ends on the baseline, so it can join the next letter. Write the rest of the word, then come back for the cross, as you would for a t. In Xa and Xi, the exit rises from the baseline; Xt needs a taller exit for the stem of t.

Questions about capital X
How many strokes is cursive capital X?
Two: a curved stroke that ends on the baseline, then a crossing line.
When do I cross the X in cursive?
After the word is finished, like crossing a t. That keeps the first stroke free to join the next letter.
