How to write capital U in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start near the top line with a small hook to the left.
- Pull down to the baseline and curve up to the top line on the right.
- Retrace straight down the right side to the baseline.
- Swing up from the baseline into the exit.
Common mistakes
- Closed top. If the top closes, U becomes A. Leave it open.
- Stem going below the line. A right stroke that drops below the baseline turns U into Y. Stop on the baseline.
- Pointed bottom. A sharp point at the bottom makes U look like V. Round the bottom.
Easy to confuse with
Capital U is easy to mix up with capital A, V and Y. A has a closed top, V has a pointed base and does not join, and Y continues below the baseline.
Joining to the next letter
Capital U ends low, so it joins. In Ur, the exit turns into the shoulder of r. Us climbs to a point for the s. Un rises into the hump of n, and Ut needs a taller exit for the stem of t.
