How to write capital N in cursive
Stroke by stroke
- Start near the middle with a small loop, then pull a stem down to the baseline.
- Retrace up the stem and arch over into a hump that reaches the top line.
- Pull the second downstroke to the baseline, keeping it parallel to the first.
- Swing up from the baseline into the exit.
Common mistakes
- Extra hump. A second hump turns N into M. Stop after one.
- Open retrace. If the upstroke does not retrace the stem, the hump becomes a loop and N looks like a capital H. Go back up the same line.
- Hump too low. A hump that only reaches the midline makes capital N look like lowercase n. Take it to the top line.
Easy to confuse with
Capital N is close to capital M, H and lowercase n. M has two humps, H has a crossing loop between two separate stems, and lowercase n is half the height.
Joining to the next letter
Capital N ends low, so it joins. Nt needs a taller exit for the stem of t. Nd swings right and back into the oval of d. In Ne, the exit flows straight into the loop of e, and Ng turns back into the oval of g.
